It is one of the oldest and broadest engineering disciplines. The engineering field requires an understanding of core concepts including mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, materials science, and structural analysis. Mechanical engineers use these core principles along with tools like computer-aided engineering and product lifecycle management to design and analyze manufacturing plants, industrial equipment and machinery, heating and cooling systems, transport systems, aircraft, watercraft, robotics, medical devices and more. The field has continually evolved to incorporate advancements in technology, and mechanical engineers today are pursuing developments in such fields as composites, mechatronics, and nanotechnology. Mechanical engineering overlaps with aerospace engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, and petroleum engineering to varying amounts.

Scope of the discipline:
There is a wide scope for mechanical engineering worldwide. mechanical engineers are the ever green employed engineersamong all others with only 7% unemployed whereas any normal engineering stream would have around 15% unemployed engineers worldwide.

Mechanical Engineering graduates are at work on everything from submarines to spacecraft, from manufacturing the most delicate integrated circuit wafers to the strongest bridges. Automotive engineers, for example, are involved in every aspect of vehicle design, from creating an aerodynamic exterior to the details of wiring and engine efficiency under the hood. Fields include: biomechanics and assistive technologies for people with disabilities, automation and robotics systems, engine and propulsion systems, design of ships, submarines, aircraft and spacecraft.

Mechanical engineering plays a dominant role in a wide spectrum of industries, like, the transportation industry (automotive rail, air and marine), heavy machinery (machines producing other machines), the power industry, the environmental industry (heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning), the light precision-machine enterprises (optical, and prosthetic devices, mechanical instruments, and the like), and numerous commercial product industries.
